Teeth Whitening Tip
Teeth whitening tip:
Tartar removal before teeth whitening
When did you have your teeth cleaned?
More than 6 months ago? If you are considering at-home teeth whitening it may be a good idea to visit your dentist for a cleaning.
Why?
During your visit your dentist scales your teeth.
Scaling removes the all the hardened plaque – called tartar - from your teeth and under your gum line. Tartar is the yellowish material stuck to your teeth. Sometimes it is hard to remove.
Tartar and bacteria are good friends. Having tartar under your gums exposes your gums to the bacteria causing gum disease, bleeding or sensitivity.
There are many reasons to remove tartar before teeth whitening:
- Tartar is unhealthy and actually makes your teeth yellowish. Just by removing tartar your teeth will look whiter.
- Tartar blocks the way to your teeth. The whitening gel must get in contact with your teeth not tartar.
- Tartar can make your teeth more sensitive to whitening gels.
During cleaning: Ask you dentist about teeth whitening.
After cleaning: Before you begin your teeth whitening treatment give your gums some time recover from the trauma.
