Prepare Your Gums and Teeth for Teeth Whitening Treatment

Get ready to begin your teeth whitening treatment. You can start your preparations even before you receive your first treatment. Depending on your oral health you may need several weeks of preparation.

There are several steps you can take to prepare your gums and teeth for teeth whitening.

You can begin treating tooth sensitivity now.

It may be hard to believe but treating sensitivity should begin even before your first whitening treatment. And there is a reason. It takes about 2 weeks for toothpastes to become effective.

Start brushing with desensitizing toothpaste. There are many different types of toothpaste available at your local supermarket.

My favorite is SensodyneŽ Extra Whitening

Sensodyne_Whitening_Toothpaste

It contains 5% potassium nitrate to treat tooth sensitivity.
It also contains fluoride to strengthen your tooth enamel.

Do not expect much whitening though. Your goal is to reduce sensitivity.

If you want to use a different product make sure it contains potassium nitrate. It is the active ingredient that reduces sensitivity.

Take good care of your gums

Flossing is the best way to remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth. It is also a good way to condition your gums for teeth whitening treatment.

Get used to flossing. If you have not been flossing regularly you can experience some initial sensitivity. This should go away in a few weeks. And do not eat after flossing.

Rinsing with warm salt water helps to heal your gums too.

Many of us suffer from some level of periodontal decease. A little bleeding while brushing is a good indication that you have some level of gum decease.

You should treat your gums before whitening if you experience bleeding, sore gums, or your gums look dark red. It is a good idea to visit your dentist with these problems.

Have your teeth cleaned

Has it been more than 6 months since your last cleaning? If yes, you should think about visiting your dentist.

Your teeth whitening treatment will be more effective and safe if you have your teeth cleaned you begin.
