Whiter Teeth with Stronger Bleaching Gels?

Will stronger gels get you whiter teeth? Or is it just marketing? Certainly, dentists use strong gels. Why shouldn’t you? But again, sometimes less is better.

When you are looking to find a teeth whitening kit you will come across a lot of percentages. 35%, 22%, 16%, 10%, 6%, it looks like it never stops.

Should you choose a stronger bleaching gel?

You will get whiter teeth faster with higher concentration gels. The emphasis is on the word “faster”. No, your teeth will not be whiter with stronger gels, but they will be white faster.

For safety reasons, at-home tooth whitening products don’t usually go beyond 22% carbamide peroxide or 6% hydrogen peroxide concentration. You can also achieve the same whiteness with lower concentration gels. You just add time.

Before you choose the most potent gel

Remember, stronger gels irritate the gums and soft tissues. The art is to find the balance. If your gel is too strong it will hurt you, if it is too weak you will be disappointed in how slowly it works.

Since I want whiter teeth fast – and I am sure you want them too – I prefer higher concentration gels.

If you are concerned about safety or have other reasons to worry, you can choose to buy a lower percentage gel and still get the same results. You just have to increase the length of the treatment.

How much whitening power can you tolerate?

If your gums and teeth are in perfect condition you can tolerate potent bleaching gels like 22% carbamide peroxide.

However if you wouldn’t call your oral health perfect you should consider starting lower, perhaps 16% carbamide perodixe. Gels are cheap; you can always buy something stronger.

How much whitening power you need?

If your teeth are grayish colored – mostly because of smoking – you will need stronger gel. Why? Because grayish stains are much harder to bleach.

On the other hand if you are doing a touch up treatment you only need a few shades whiter teeth. Choose a lower concentration bleaching gel.

I think you are getting the idea.
